Oberneuland – Borussia M’gladbach

Oberneuland hosts Borussia M’gladbach in a match from the first round of the DFB Pokal. This game is going to be played at the Borussia-Park in Monchengladbach, so maybe we should say that Borussia are actually the hosts here.

But who are Oberneuland exactly? This is a small team from Germany’s Regionalliga. Thet already started their participance in the Nord Sud division, suffering a 0-2 defeat against Havelse. Clearly they are not a team to match Borussia M’gladbach, but the elite team must be really careful not to underrestimate its opponent. In these Cup games we are seeing surprises all of the time.

Borussia M’gladbach had a successful campaign during the 2019/20 season. They finished 4th in the Bundesliga which meant they will play again in the Champions League. M’gladbach finished just two points ahead of the 5th Bayer Leverkusen.

After the solid previous season Marco Rose remains manager of Borussia M’gladbach. On the transfer market the club made some deals as well. The American right back Joe Scally was signed from New York City, while RB Leipzig’s Hannes Wolf and Inter Milan’s Valentino Lazaro were signed on loan deals.

At the same time Tobias Strobl left the club on a free transfer while Fabian Johnson and Raffael did the same thing.

In their last friendly game to date Borussia M’gladbach faced Dutch side VVV and achieved a solid 4-0 win. This game came just one week after Borussia’s 0-2 loss against Greuther Furth in another friendly match.

In our preview we believe that Oberneuland are not really a match to Borussia M’gladbach at this point. The Bundesliga side is much better and we believe they will take what’s theirs. At the beginning of the season M’gladbach won’t be at their full potential, but they are still good enough to avoid surprises here.
